Phung Chang Cave lies hidden within Khao Chang, a great limestone mountain that forms one of the distinctive natural landmarks of Phang Nga. The cave’s name is connected to the shape of the mountain, which resembles a reclining elephant, with the cave situated in the area imagined as the elephant’s belly. Deep within this mountain, water has slowly flowed through cracks in the limestone, gradually dissolving and eroding the rock to create underground passages, waterways, and hidden chambers. What we see today was not formed within a human lifetime, but is the result of water, stone, and time working together to shape an extraordinary underground landscape.
