Ao Manao Beach & Wing 5 – Coastal Beauty and World War II Heritage
Ao Manao is a curved bay south of Prachuap Khiri Khan town, within the grounds of Wing 5 of the Royal Thai Air Force. Framed by Khao Lom Muak and the Khlong Wan hills, its broad sandy beach and shallow coastal waters create a peaceful setting. The surrounding mountains give the bay a sheltered character and a distinct place among the town’s coastal landscapes.
These shores also hold an important chapter of Thailand’s wartime history. On 8 December 1941, Japanese troops landed at Prachuap Khiri Khan. Thai airmen, police, and local civilians resisted the invasion, continuing their defence until orders arrived to cease fighting. Their courage is remembered through the events known locally as the Heroic Defence of 8 December 1941.
Memorials and historical displays within Wing 5 honour those who lost their lives and preserve accounts of the battle. Visiting them brings a deeper understanding of the quiet beach seen today. Ao Manao offers both the beauty of a coastal retreat and a place to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of those who defended Thailand.
