Phraya Nakhon Cave & Kuha Karuhas Pavilion – Thailand's Hidden Royal Landmark
Phraya Nakhon Cave, within Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, is a vast limestone chamber with openings in its roof that allow daylight to reach the floor below. At its heart stands Kuha Karuhas Pavilion, a graceful four-gabled royal pavilion built during the reign of King Rama V. When sunlight falls upon its roof, framed by towering cave walls, the scene becomes one of Prachuap Khiri Khan’s most memorable sights.
The journey begins at Ban Bang Pu, with a boat ride around the headland to Laem Sala Beach or a walk across the coastal hill. From the beach, an uphill trail leads to the cave through limestone woodland. Stone steps, steep sections, and warm conditions call for suitable footwear, drinking water, and time to rest. An early start makes the climb more comfortable, while late morning can bring beautiful light around the pavilion, depending on the season and weather.
The experience unfolds through changing landscapes—fishing village, sea, quiet beach, forest, and finally the stillness of the cave. Reaching the pavilion brings a rewarding sense of arrival, with time to pause and appreciate its setting. The visit is best suited to travellers comfortable with an uphill walk. Older guests and those with limited mobility should assess the climb in advance, with a gentler alternative arranged for the same day.
